From June 16, a Bike Taxi ban came into force in Karnataka [1] following the Karnataka High Court ruling [2] against the operation of bike taxi aggregators in the state.
What it means
The ban on bike taxis carries broader policy implications – not just for Karnataka, but for the country as a whole amid rapid urbanization and growing urban mobility needs. The foremost concern is the potential violation of the fundamental right to trade [3] and the right to livelihood.
Additionally, bike taxis highlight a turf war between auto and taxi unions and bike taxi operators in Karnataka [4]. This raises questions about whether one lobby group can claim rights at the expense of others and the general public.
Safety for both riders and drivers is another concern [5]. In case of accidents, questions arise regarding liability – who pays the price and who bears responsibility?
Yet another policy issue is accident insurance for bike taxis. Who is entitled to benefits – the passenger, the bike owner, or the bike driver?
